Irrigation Electrovalves

The electrovalves are, as the name suggests, valves whose operation is due to an electrical device connected. The object of the design lies in the control of water flow through the pipe.

Components of an Electrovalve:

An electrovalve consists of two elements:

  • Solenoid: It is a copper coil, usually shaped like a long cylinder that when carrying a current resembles a magnet so that a movable core of ferromagnetic material is attracted to the coil when a current flows.
  • Valve: It is the element that permits or restricts the water flow due to actuation of the solenoid.

Types of electrovaves:

The electrovalves can be of two types:

  • Normally closed: when there is no power they remain closed. These are commonly used in irrigation.
  • Normally open: left open when there is no power.

Operation of Irrigation Electrovalves:

The electrovalves normally closed operate so that when the solenoid is energized this moves the ferromagnetic core causing entry of water that raises the closing element of the valve and it causes the door opening, allowing the water flow as shown in the diagram.

Installation of Irrigation Electrovalves:

Valves are installed in an irrigation system in order to control the input automatically through a programmer.

They can be found in the following parts of an installation:

  • In the stretch drive of a pump, to prevent discharge of the system.
  • At the entrance to the irrigation sectors, to allow the irrigation of each sector individually.
